Primarly due to the energy rich region of natural gas, oil and coal. Pike County has been designated by County Judge Executive, Wayne T. Rutherford, as the Energy Capital of America . Recent legislation has paved the way for expanded research and implementation of coal to liquid and corn ethanol fuel development establishing an organized, concerted effort toward intense and rapid development of these abundant and increasingly clean, efficient sources of alternative energy. The consensus goal is to reduce US dependence upon imported energy products and utilize Kentucky's natural resources. The innovative and very capable leadership of Pikeville is stepping forward and challenging the world to join them in this noble and necessary mission.
Pike County is the Kentucky (McCoy) side of the infamous Hatfield and McCoy Feud; the Hatfields reside just across the Tug Fork River in West Virginia. Pikeville hosts Internationally acclaimed "Hillbilly Days," the third week in April and is second only to the Kentucky Derby as the largest attended annual festival in Kentucky, receiving 100,000+ visitors from all across the world. Hillbilly Days contributes all its receipts to Shriner's Children Hospital.
The City of Pikeville is home to over 6,500 residents and is the county seat for the largest county in the state of Kentucky with a population of approximately 70,000. It is the financial capital of the Appalachian Basin. Pikeville is the 3rd largest banking community in the State, ranking only behind Louisville and Lexington.
